E40D shifting problem

E40D shifting problem

I have a 1997 F250 HD with an E40D with a 5.8 liter with about 220,000 mi. Mine is plagued with rough shifting issues. It shifts from 1 to 2, and 2 is not there. It revs a bit and then after a few seconds, bang, it shifts into third and the O/D light starts flashing. It shows no codes on this problem.

It is an intermitent problem also, it starts off normally and the starts acting up after 1 to 5 miles and sometimes not at all.

I have tried the new VSS and that seemed to work for a while (days). I did the oil filter and flush on the tranny but it was very clean inside and the oil smelled and looked fine.

I have seen metion on one post on FTE of a bulkhead connector problem, but I have not found out which one it is yet. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

With that many miles and assuming never rebuilt, it may be time for your tranny to throw you some new tricks.

I think most code readers do not read the tranny codes, I could be wrong. So I would take it toa shop to read the tranny codes or maybe one of the parts shops has a reader that can handle the tranny codes.

Wild guess is that maybe the valvebody or solenoids for 2nd are gone. Don't know about the bulk head connector and I am NOT an expert on trannies.

I remember reading a post that said that all the electrical connectors going to the tranny should be removed and carefully inspected for corrosion, dirt and oil. Your supposed to clean them and use di-electric grease. The same post said the tranny harness went up into the engine compartment near the Master cylinder and those connectors should also be inspected and cleaned. Intermittent connections at the MLPS and the solenoid pack will confuse the hell out of the PCM.

Electronic controls are great....until they start acting up. LOL

I read my codes again yesterday after my post and it kicked out a code for the VSS, whcih surprised me a bit since I changed it within 2000 miles. I also checked the wiring at the rear axle and the bulkhead and both connections were pristine, and I saw no intermittencies when I tugged on and flexed the axle harness to the VSS, so I am wondering if I have either the wrong sensor or a bad out of the box unit. It was after market, so who knows. I picked up another truck for parts, so I am going to try swapping the one out of my parts truck.

As for the tranny, I have only put about 6000 miles on this truck, and prior to that it was a fleet unit with it appears good regular maintenance. Somebody had changed the oil or maybe the whole tranny before I got it, because I have looked at a fgew of these units and they are never that clean inside after that mileage with out having had some TLC.

I will keep uo posted on the progress, but it is frustrating, and I shudder to think what that unit will cost to overhaul.
