I just purchased a 2000 F250 xlt 2wd 6speed. I have been searching for a swap or parts list to change over to a 4wd and possibly and auto. The 4wd swap is more important and i was just wondering if everything is a direct bolt on replacement or does there need to be fabrication as well? Thanks for any help
Welcome to the site;
I woould like to be the first to welcome you aboard.
My response is probably not what you want to hear, but here goes. A 4wd conversion on a late model truck is terribly expensive. By the time you factor in all of the stuff necessary to do it, (not to mention time), you would have been better off buying a 4x4 truck.
I could not imagine having a great deal of ease trrying to find the manual t-case that you will need. I say manual because it would be just plian crazy to want to install the ESOF system. Next would be the transmission, you wil have to change out the ouput shaft, and tailshaft just to get the adapter to bolt up. Hacking out the front suspension, adding hangers, and buying front springs is a bunch of work, but is really the easy part.
Bottom line is that you will invest more time and money than the conversion is worth. If 4wd was that important, why did you recently buy this 2wd? Even so, you will be time and money ahead just buying a truck that was already born as a 4wd.
Just my opinion.....
and i think you have a correct opinion, but in my case i got a deal that i pretty much walked away with a truck for half the cost of anything compareble even. I was just looking for an idea of what parts exactly i would need and if my chassis was even the same as the one on a 4x4 the same year. If its all bolt up and nothing where i have to really cut to much up i figured it would be something i would just take my time on to get deals on. Im not looking to do it over night but id like to have the option ya know?
All the morer reason to buy one already done.
Heres what I think; Since you got a screamin deal on the truck, why not sell it and make money on it, and then you can look for another that is already 4wd. You will be a bunch of money ahead.
Maybe you could get a front axle for a grand if you bought a D50.
Trans and case another coulpe thousand.
Drivelines another thousand.
suspension another thousand.
That is before you spend any time installing the stuff. The difference in blue book values is around 4 grand. Sell yours for what it is worth, and buy a decent truck that is 4wd , and you will spend less money, and spend zero time with regards to labor. Not to mention the final value of both vehicles. If you ever decided to sell it down the road, which one will bring the higher amaount?
The one that was converted, or the one that was born a 4wd?
Food for thought.
i thank you for the knowledge of the difficulty and that in most cases that this conversions cost would out weight its purpose but i still would like to know if there is any chance anyone has a full list of the parts needed to swap for this conversion just for conversation sake.. ie the reason i posted the topic. thanks guys
Complete front axle with corresponding ratio and wheels.
Entire steering and suspension components.
Transmission and convertor.
If you are going automatic another radiator which has an internal cooler or an external cooler.
Transfer case.
Both drive shafts.
Cross member.
Linkages.
Exhaust system.
There is a reason why you got the truck cheap its a 2wd nobody wants 2wd trucks you can get them for a dime a dozen.
If you wanted a 4x4 you should have bought a 4x4. Its amazing how some people think they are saving money converting a truck to 4x4.
You bought a 2wd truck live with it you should have considered its going to cost you 3 grand to convert it.
List of parts
Front axle
Front springs and hangers
Steering
Front Driveshaft
Transfer Case
Rear spring blocks
New U bolts all the way around
New Rubber Brake lines Front and Rear
New Rear driveshaft
New Floor Pan over transmission
For god sake you would think i asked how i can do a kidney transplant. Its not like i need 4x4 for the truck to function. I just was wondering theoretically what it would take to do. I wasnt looking to get flamed for just being curious i really dont need the 4x4 for anything specific if i had it i would maybe use it 2 times a year if that. Thank you though, i learned my lesson for thinking outside the box and maybe just seeking insight about what it would take to do something over a long period of time. Im glad to have been taught so far that i am a tool for buying a dime a dozen 2wd because obviously i dont have any connections to getting the main parts for this swap for next to nothing... like i do. Good to know.
But honestly thank you for the list after the flame job.
