1979 F100 3 speed manual problems

Ok I have a 1979 F100 302/3 speed manual 2wd, it has been converted to floor shift by a previous owner, and last month I put a new clutch in it. Yesterday while I was driving I "lost" first gear. When I try to place the shifter in fist gear it does not "click" like it should, I could feel the gear, and the shifter itself feels sloppy. When I let off the clutch in what is supposed to be first gear it grinds and sometimes falls in if I push the shifter hard enough. Any suggestions as to what my problem may be???????? Its a B&M Universal 3 speed truck shifter, btw, and its not even been 2000 miles since I put the new clutch in.

What is getting into reverse like ?

1st & Reverse are related.

Perhaps you have a linkage binding or loose ?

it makes noise, but it doesnt jump out of gear like 1st and second, it makes a kinda grinding noise tho, like 2 movin parts rubbin,

btw, I took the top cover plate off and shifted the gear without it runnin, and when I shift 1st and reverse the whole shaft and gears move, I dont think its supposed 2 do that

I originally thought of the linkages, but I checked and adjusted them and it didnt help, I even tightned up the metal plate that bolt 2 the shift forks from the linkages

It could be a bad or worn out synchro, bad detent, bad pilot bearing, or a sloppy shifter. Fix and adjust the shifter first.

If it is not an external problem then it could be one of the other problems I listed above. Take it to an experienced tranny shop for evaluation.

All those manual trannies operate the same so you should be able to manipulate the system to figure out what is wrong. The interior parts are slightly different but the functions they perform are the same. If it is a bad interior part a set of OEM service manuals are best. They have parts and pictures as well as specs etc.
