After over 2 years, I finally tried to start my 1954 F250 today. I have a 1961 292 that I rebuilt. Everything is new or rebuilt except for the coil. The coil worked on the motor before I tore it down, so I figure it is OK.
The engine will start up every time I crank it over and then die within a second or two. I think the longest the truck stayed running was 5 seconds or so.
I have a 2 barrel carb that I rebuilt. I can see gas spraying when I pump the throttle.
I was careful when I assembled the motor to get the timing at TDC. The engine doesn't stay running long enough for me to check.
I put 3 gallons of gas in the tank. Is that enough to suck out with the fuel pump?
Any suggestions of things to check would be appreciated. This never ending project is starting to wear me down.
Are you sure you have the carb set correctly, sounds like it is starting on the spray from the throttle pump and then starving down. Maybe try opening the jets another half turn.
Are you getting power to the coil in the run position? If you dribble fuel down the carb does it stay running? These checks will tell you if its fuel or ignition.
