I used to do it at 500 miles on a new vehicle but I went to 2000 miles on my F150 V6 and 2600 on my Expedition. I'm using Mobil 1 in the Expy and the syn blend motorcraft in the F150.
Wait until you have 1000 miles on the truck, take it to the dealer and have them do the first oil change, let the dealer stuggle with the oil filter, it can be very hard to get the original oil filter off.
I always change my new vehicle's oil at 1,000 miles. That's to get rid of any metal flakes or shavings from the manufacturing process. And for the doubters out there, I've seen the little shiney "devils" in the drain pan afterwards!
I wouldn't wait till 3k miles, so if you want to do it at 1,000 that's fine, but either expect a big pain in the A$S to take the oil filter off, or go to the dealer and let them take care of it.
The filter doesn't have any lube on the ring, and it's on very tight.
I haven't done it, but EVERYONE here will tell you that it is pretty hard to do(no 30 minute job).
I would go tomarrow. I did the 1,000 mile wait and my oil came out pitch black. Don't wait. The longer that crap is in there, the more damage it can do. My oil comes out nice and clean now, but the initial change was an eye opener
btw, pay the $20-40 for the change. It took me over 1 hour to get that filter off the first time. A mechanized arm does the factory install without an oil film on the gasket. It vacuum seals to the motor and is dang near impossible to get off without hurting yourself.
