hey guys, i have a 02 f150 extcab, 4x4 and the other day we started getting a slight grinding/rubbing noise from the front and the ABS light came on.
I checked the rotors, and there is no obvious marks. The pads are good but glazzed over. I said that it might be the barrings going, so i went to the local parts house, and $300.00 a side!!!!
Lets just pray that aint it. So, i bought some break cleaner and sprayed the hell out of it, and it went away, now its back.. so.. keep spraying or fix the problem.
To rule out a wheel bearing, jack up the truck and put jack stands under it properly. Grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to move the tire up and down. If you can feel it move, it is the wheel bearing. If not see if the caliper is hanging up due to stiff or frozen sliders, or the pads not moving freely.
The ABS light could be the result of a bad wheel speed sensor unit and if bad enough, it could be dragging on the crimped speed sensor disk behnind the brake disk causing the noise.
The Wheel speed sensor is a set of mannets that send a signal to the ABS unit as the crimped disk passes the sensor magnets.
Both front units on my '97 F150, lat, 2x4, 5.4 were bad and one was rubbing on the crimped disk. Replaced both and it is OK.
