Your Opinion on a 93 4 Banger

I've been lurking here for a little while. I recently read the posting Thinking about a Ranger, is this a good deal? from Marty. Everyone's been great about answering questions. This is a good forum.

I know that I want a 4 banger extended cab Ranger. That's really all I gotta have past air conditioning. 2 wheel drive. I will commute back and forth around town. I have several Cub Cadets and will take one to a tractor show once or twice a year. Please check out the add below. Just found it on Craig's list and intend to go look at it this weekend. The only problem I see is the mileage. They are asking $2500.00. I'd like to drive it for another 100,000 miles.

Gentlemen what are your thoughts?

1993 Ford Ranger, Extended Cab, 2WD, 4 Cylinder Engine, New Transmission(10,000 miles old), Tune-up just done(new coil packs included), New Coolant System and Water Pump, New Timing Belt(10,000 miles old),New Brakes(8,000 miles old), A/C, CD Player, 5-speed Manual, Sliding Rear Window, 189,000 miles. Truck runs and drives great. Gets about 25mpg.

Sounds good. Things to check, start with the engine. 189K is a lot of mileage as you noted. It's not easy to run a vehicle to 300K with no issues, and above 200, expect something to happen at some point.

Start with a very very detailed inspection of the engine. Obviously this guy maintained it, entire cooling system, timing belts, brakes, tranny, he cared about the truck. See what the tuneup entailed. Does he have detailed maintenance records?

You need to drive it and really check out the engine, that's the most important thing to note. ANY leaks at all? Ask him if it burns any oil. No smoke out the tailpipe? Get a long screwdriver and put it on the valve cover while the engine is running and listen for any odd noises.

Well maintenance wouldn't shy me away from that truck, if it had been taken care of and the previous owner could prove it. Do talk him down from that price though...a lot.

Price is about right because of the new trany, but you can probably find a lower mileage 4 cyl for same or less $.
these trucks don't hold value, even with new clutch or trany, no body cares.
I sold my 94 with 156k miles $2400 w/ brand new Michellin tires, and new clutch.

I think the 2.3 93 motor is great. Had one with 184,000 miles that always started, used no oil, and got up to 28 mpg.

My problem was with the bottom of truck. It rotted out from salt.

Check the gas straps and the leaf spring brackets for corrosion.

Used 5W30 oil, changing filter and oil every 4k miles.

Thanks for the responces. Given the info offered here I have moved on to another truck. I'm now looking at a 94 ranger with 145,000 on it for less money. Thank you for the advice.
