ive got a 97 f-150 4.2 auto 4x2 and the trans went out i was wondering if anyone new if a 98-2003 4r70w would work in it. i have looked into it and there is a different part number so far all i have noticed is the number of theeth on the speedometer drive gear. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
I typed a long detailed reply a couple of days ago-then after I hit reply...the site became unresponsive.
In a nutshell...yes,you can use a later model trans.
You want a '99-up 4R70W('97's had a failure prone roller clutch, and the mechanical diode replacements for that roller clutch used in '98 had some problems),and it MUST be from either a 6-cylinder mustang or a 6-cylinder truck-the modulars have a different bellhousing. You'll need to repin the trans main bulkhead connector on the harness,or swap your solenoids,TOT sensor, and connector from the old trans into the new trans. I'd suggest repinning the bulkhead connector-it's very easy, and I have the diagram here to do so. You just need to make sure the trans you get has the correct speedo driven gear on the VSS-the same color and/or number of teeth that the one your trans has. If there's not a VSS installed-it's not a problem-all 4R70W's up til '03 have speedo drive gear teeth on the output shaft-just pull the plastic plug and install your VSS in the new trans.
