i just purchased a 2000 f-250 and i think it might have a wastegated turbo? i can hear the turbo spool and when i let off the gas it makes a loud whoosh or dumping chirping noise is this normal? or when it shifts it will woosh chirp is this any thing to worry about?
Contrary to your belief, that sound you hear is not the wastegate. That is normal sound, it is the air rushing out backwards past the turbocharger and back out through the airfilter. Say if you have 20psi of boost and then let off of the throttle, the turbo stops stuffing air in, the air takes the easier route backwards and expands 15-20 times over as it goes back to atmospheric pressure. The wastegate is in the exhaust side of the turbochager, and it regulates the exhaust backpressure to thus regulate the boost by controlling turbocharger speed. And yes, your factory turbo does have a wastegate.
thanks kris yea i have an afe intake and sometimes when im goin up a hill it seems like it cant decide if it wants to let it all out or keep spooling. i think next week i am going to buy an sct chip for it
That repeated wooshing sound under a load is NOT good. What you need to fix the turbo surge is a Wicked Wheel compressor wheel, it is $60, and it adds tons of compressor side turbo whistle. www.xtremediesel.com
