91 Bronco XL 4x4 :: Jumping Issue - Almost Stallout
91 4x4 Automatic Ford Bronco XLT
Motor: V8
Mileage is: 136,000
Year: 1991
In the past few weeks I noticed a my idle has been poor at times - really inconsistent. Here are some details:
- When I first start up and drive off it almost feels as if I am going to stall out.
- When I get up to about 45-55 and tatking off or just cruising on the highway I will get will - what seem to be - power losses. No stall, but just kind of jolts like light kicks (like losing power or gas shrortage feeling). The all will be fine for 5-10 minutes again.
- When I am idling at a red light my RPMs gauge is "shaky" like I might stall out - it does not happen all the time, and I have not stalled fully yet.
What have I done to try to fix it: - Changed the fuel filter
- Had a new tranny put in (not becuase of this issue), but I did notice it started after the tranny work was complete. It was very recently.
- Had a tune up 10,000 miles ago
- Recent oil change
If anyone has any ideas where I should check or even what the worst case scenario could be, please let me know.
I'm looking for any recommendations or suggestions as to where I should start to look. Thanks,
RK
The first thing I was going to say was fuel filter but you've done that already.
Have you checked your timing?
How bout a miss?
I know you said you recently had a tune-up, but what all did that entail.
Maybe one of you cylinder's isn't firing; or firing inconsistently.
Did they change your rotor cap with the tune up?
Maybe you have a bad connection or dirty contact on one of them.
make sure the plug wires are routed properly and not touching each other. and double check the firing order as well. its easy to get them mixed up. your tranny is probably the e4od, have you tried pulling codes www.fordfuelinjection.com will show you how.

lbianc1, thanks for your feedback. I am going to continue to dig around to see what I can pull.
Kemical helped me figure mine out...plug wires mixed up (same/similar problem). get the haynes and double check. It is worth a look. If a chevy guy did your tune up....you be screwed.

moemeadors, thanks for the suggestion. Im hoping it's a simple as that. Do you know if the plug wires would have been removed and put back on by the company that did my tranny?
You know, it really depends on they way they took it out. But, it could have been during the tuneup and the tranny problems you where having would mask it. Mine started when I put headers on, I labeled the wires and sure as crap, they had been on wrong since I bought the truck. But the increased performance, seemed to cause all kinds of issues.

Good luck.
Im going to take it over to my local Ford guy. I really don't want to mess anything up, but I will surley post what the cause and fix was if I still have money to afford the internet (after the repairs)
He did mention only changing one fuel filter... He could try some seafoam in the tank, could be fuel pump pickup sock, supply or return filter...put some seafoam in the tank? cheap and easy check, clean up some of the fuel system...
