6.4l fuel economy

Can anyone give some facts about their new 6.4l PSD's fuel economy? Especially if it is in comparison to the 6.0l PSD. Thanks.

My current 6.0l gets between 14 and 15 mpg. We have three of these models and they all avg. same economy. We also have 23 2006 and 2007 model Dodge's (3/4 ton, crew cabs, 4x4 diesel) who avg. of 17.4 mpg. All of this data is managed via log books and presented by our accounting department. The new 6.4l needs to be directly competitive with the Cummins to prevail. Is it possible mile for mile, load for load?

6.4 fuel economy

I just turned 1,ooo miles on my 6.4 so not much to share except for two things. The 6.4 runs at lower rpm's (1800) at 70 mph than does the 6.0 at 70 mph (2000 rpm). Fuel economy on my 05 6.0 was similar to yours. The 6.4 isn't working as hard as the 6.0 and will likely result in better fuel economy, I suspect a 10% improvement at a minmum. The second observation I can share is this; I am driving the 08 F-250 King Ranch and the other night I was returning home with 4 adults in the cab with nothing in the bed in a 60 mph speed zone. I set the cruise control at 65mph and reset the mpg meter to zero. After a 20 mile uninterrupted stretch, my fuel economy was 18.4 mpg which will only improve when the engine finally breaks-in. Now I never did this with my 05 but I suspect it wouldn't have faired as well.

ps This truck is light years beyond my 05 Super Duty from all perspectives.

On every diesel I have ever owned the fuel milage kept getting better and better as the miles on the truck increased. I've found it starts to level out at about 20,000 miles. I guess that's when it's full broke in. Course I baby my trucks; however, I do pull a 15K trailer.

Bag Man, I did the same thing on my 08 yesterday. Filled up outside of Baton Rouge for $2.79/gal and reset the mpg. Took off to Lafayette over the Atchafalaya Spillway (it's about a 30 mile bridge) and with an average speed around 67-68 mph, the computer was reading as high as 19 mpg, but settled on 18.5 when exiting off the interstate into city traffic. After a bunch of city driving, the computer dropped to 14.5. I expect to rise as well once it breaks in. I have not broken the 1000 mile barrier yet...only about 850 miles.

I have just over 600 miles on my new 08 6.4L and going by the computer I am seeing right about 13 mpg. When I first picked up the truck I was seeing about 11.2 and it's only gone up. I would say I do about 70% freeway and 30% city driving.

Nick, is your truck a 4.10 or 3.73? Mine has never dropped below 13.5 mpg city driving. It usually stays above 14 mpg, but when hwy comes in, it really jumps up.

In my truck I have the 3.73's. I just installed the intake so I am hopin that will help a touch. I know the motor still needs to break in. Also I would say I have a Med lead foot when it comes to the gas.

Hummm. well I test drove a 6.4, F-350, cc, 3:73 diff,4X4,SWD for 2 days..now it only had 75 miles on it when I drove it out of the dealership and I put 200 miles on it in mostly highway driving at the speed limit and never got better than 13.3MPG.My present 05, V-10, CC,Lb Dually, 4;30 Diff can do that good over the same roads.. We are planning on purchasing the 6.4 so I hope some of you guys are not telling stories.

I drove a 2008 F450 yesterday from Elkhart IN back to KY a little over 400 miles. Interstate driving between 65 and 75 I got 9.5 mpg I reset it thru some town driving and got almost 12 mpg. The truck has a 4.88 gear and had 1200 miles when I got done with it. I hope this helps.

yeah if these trucks are anything like my 7.3 they should keep rising till about 200,000 miles not 20,000 like some people are saying, i just broke 200,000 miles this year (214k) and that's when it started leveling off, it runs between i would say 11 and 14 city and 16-19 highway, lead foot of course gotta hear those stacks! i would expect the new 6.4's to beat that once they get broken in

richfaa, why would you think we are telling stories. As for me, I have nothing to gain from telling you a story (lie). I am telling you the truth. Purchase the 6.4 or don't, I don't care. I didn't purchase for reading mpg reports on a forum. I bought it because I liked the look and especially the interior, but also cause I pull a big bassboat all over the state. I am hoping the diesel will do better w/ mpg in the long run than my Titan did, and so far it is. The two times I have filled up the calculated mpg was 14 and 13.5 w/ the second about 55% hwy, 45% city. The computer was reading 14.5 and 14 respectively. When I made a about a 50 mile trip after filling up, I cleared the mpg computer and it read 18.5 before exiting the interstate. I was doing between 65 and 70 the whole way, and at one point it was reading 19.0. I will try to fill up after a trip like that just to see if the calculated results are the same or close. The key seems to be no hard acceleration and keeping the rpm under 2000. In fact, I will try to bring the camera and take a picture of the computer while running just to show those in doubt.

I am pleased so far with mileage results and I do wish yall were getting the same or better, but I have no reason to tell you otherwise. I wish you luck in your purchase if you decide to do so. I know you will love the truck as all of us 08 owners can and are testifying with or without mileage results.

Do any of you have the 450 with 4.30's? Probably does not really matter if it is 450 or not except I am not sure of the tire size on the 250/350. Can anyone with the 450 and 4.30's tell me how many rpms they are running when going 75mph?

Strut, any towing involved with your calculations?

IMO that's pretty good milage for a 450 w/4.88's.
