Electric Fuel pump air locked?

Was wonder if anyone has any advise on resolving my little problem.

I am running a carbed '90 302 in my '76 F100, I use an electric fuel pump with a filter. The pump is mounted on the frame of the truck a foot or two ahead of the tank. All works very well, except... on two occassions now I've run out of gas. I carry a two gallon gerry can with me and poured the two gallons into the tank, fuel gauge went up but the truck wouldn't start. I can hear the pump running but when I pulled the fuel line off of the carb I'm not getting any fuel.
I had the truck towed home and when I got it home ot started right away!
The only thing I can think of is that I got air in the system and the pump was starved? over time or bumps on the back of the tow truck the air worked it's way out and the pump was primed?
Does that make sense? and.. is there a way to over come this some how with a vent or bypass line? Yah, I know the obvious answer is don't run out of gas! I used to be able to run the truck with the needle past the "E" now it dies right on the "E", maybe this is related to my problem?

Thanx
Frank

Well, the problem is that most electric pumps do not suck well. They are intended to be gravity fed. So once you break suction, it is hard to get gas back to the pump. If possible, the pump should be mounted lower than the tank.

An air leak in the line between the tank and pump will also cause this problem.
