first of all i bought this truck last week, its a 1997 ford ranger extended cab 2wd 4.0 with an automatic tranny. While driving it has a loud matalic noise. it sounds like its coming from the drive shaft but im not sure yet. it makes the sound in all gears and if im up to speed and put it into nutral it still makes the noise. i checked the tranny fluid and the level is good, is there a possibility the rear pumpkin is low on fluid or even worse empty? im just throwing things out there, hopefully this cold weather will turn and i can work on it.
thanks for the replys! the noise isnt coming from the motor ive had the pinging on another ranger i had, as for the carrier bearing ill have to check into that. the noise seems to slow down as i slow down
no diffrence while braking, sound is coming from under the cab and its almost like a whinning sound but matalic. if i get a chance today ill go out and see if it has a carrier bearing.
This may sound foolish, but after much troubleshooting, I felt foolish when it happened to me...check your heat shields on all of the exhaust components. Something might just be loose and rattling.
I just fixed a similarly described sound on my Ranger. Turns out that the cover for the bell housing was slightly vibrating when in motion. Jus had to literally bend the lower lip of that cover plate away from the bell housing and POOF, vibration sound gone.
Good luck.
Agree that you should check the CAT heat shields first, then that tranny cover plate.
