Does anyone have an opinion on the aftermarket, "improved" heads available for '90-'94 4.0 litre engines (explorer XLT). From what I understand the have a considerable degree of extra thickness at the base and other known week spots are also shored-up.
Has anyone gone this route? Is it worth it over a set of remans or rebuilding what I have (ie: stock heads)?
If your engine has a lot of miles on it you could run into problems with oil consumption when you put on the new heads. This has nothing to do with the "improved" heads, but rather the increased compression from having better sealing valves. It will suck oil past the rings and start to burn oil. If you have a low mile motor ( 50 - 70K) you should be OK. But if your engine is running fine now, even compression, not burning oil, why bother??
Well, balancing possible costs, I can get the brand new "improved" heads for less than $380 for the pair, plus they'll throw in a complete gasket set and new head bolts for another $90. NAPA wants $212 for the gasket/bolt set, and I don't think I can have my heads gone through for less than $380 (even more if one is cracked and I need to find a core)....and I will be doing a top-end OH while things are apart, be it new heads or rebuilt.
The motor appears to be gently-used beyond this cooling issue. 94,000 miles but sounds/runs great with no oil consumption or other issues.
