1961 y block to 1989 302 5.0

I am going to be removing my 292 Y-block engine in my 1961 F350 and replacing it with a 1989 302 angine that I have. Does anyone know what conversion parts I am going to need? I could probably figure most of it out, just thought maybe I would save a little time by asking first. Pre-planning if you know what I mean. Frame mounts, angine mounts, bellhousing for manual 4 speed, etc. I am removing the fuel injection setup and puting in a 4bbl intake and carb. Any pointers & suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Aaron, you are going from a front mount to a side mount engine. You will need an engine conversion kit available from most of the good suppliers, and the matching tranny or the bell as the two engines have different bolt patterns.

You will also need an electric fuel pump as the provisions for a fuel pump are omitted on efi motors. The drive shaft will have to made for it also.

Well, I knew I would need the bellhousing. I have frame mounts for a small block already from one of the other conversions I already did. The holes are not there, but are easily made. Just have to mount it to the bellhousing first to find out where to drill the holes. I was actually completely wrong about it having a brownie box in one of my other posts. It has a 2 speed rear end. I am going to be selling the fuel injection setup that is on it and going with a carb instead. I actually have 2 of these injection setups. I put the same engine into my '65 Mustang. I know I will need to run my own throttle linkage. Anything else major I might need to know?

Keep in mind that the water pump on the 89 turns backwards, and you will
have to change it. As for the fuel pump you can change the timing cover
to the old kind and add the fuel pump cam to your timing set, some of the
newer front covers only have a fuel pump block off plate! Also the engine
does not have the boss in the side of the block for your clutch linkage,
also I'm not sure your balancer will work with the fly wheel you will be using?
You may have to run an old style balancer?

P.s. I have in the past used one of the brackets from a newer year truck,
it bolted to the side of the bell housing swings around the side of the block,
as I recall I did have to grind on this bracket for it to bolt to the old style
bell housing for the clutch linkage issue, but it did work in the end!

Just to question replacing the water pump, it doesn't need to be replaced as long as he is running all the other accesories on the front of the engine. If your thinking of running power steering or A/C at some point there is a kit that replaces them with blanking pullies. The 5.0 was also balanced externally with the 50oz dampener and flywheel as pointed out by Wally. With that said I did a quick google search coving the topic. You can not swap the 50 oz parts for the 28 oz because it will damage the engine. There is also an adapter bellhousing and flywheel available. It is in another post covering the same process, do a quick search to find it. I know you already have the engine crossmember but check the link for a trans one.

The throttle linkage will be pretty simple with a kit similar to the Lokar 23" universal throttle linkage. You can make your own like I did but that went away once I needed to install a kickdown cable asembly. I spent the same amount of money for both throttle pieces. Your going to also swap over the altinetor and wiring for the 61. It is a pretty straight forward wire swap. Check out http://www.tocmp.com/tOCMP/wiring/1964F100/index.htm to get an idea of what wires you need to move around. I know the link is for a 64 but the principle is the same. Let us know if there is anything else you need. We love to argue and squable about these things.

Dude as good as the Y block was, it hasn't been used since the late 50s and last installed in a truck in 64. While the mighty 427 makes grown men weak in the knees today it is from the early 60s and you can get a lot more from a newer engine for less money today.

So keep your chin up, you can't save them all even if you you wanted to.
