I have a 56 F-100 In which I want to put a 302 or 351W. Will find a donnor vehicle. Know it is done all the time but I haven't done it. Can someone tell me how to go about it and hints on making it a smooth changeover? Thanks.
Glen
The motor/trans swap is pretty straightforward. A lot depends on the suspension you have under the front of your truck. Assuming it's stock F100, buy the appropriate motor mounting kit and transmission crossmember (with pad if you need it). Basically there are 2 kinds of motor mounts available. There is a bolt on kind which is probably the easiest. Each mount is made up of a bracket that bolts to each side of the engine, a rubber mount for each side and an L-bracket that bolts to each frame rail. The L - brackets bolt on and make a perch for the engine to sit on. Place the engine/trans. where you want it and measure so that both mounts are on each frame rail in the same place. Then drill and bolt it up. The other kind of motor mount is the weld on kind. It takes more work probably and it's a different kind of install. It still involves placing the motor and trans. in the right place. Transmission crossmembers are the easiest part about this. Most trans mounts sit on the frame or under the frame and bolt to it. Once your engine is mounted the transmission is where it is basically. Make sure both the engine and trans fit your truck before you drill or weld anything. Because these trucks are nose heavy (like most trucks), I like the engine and trans set back as far as possible toward the firewall. You need clearance, but even half an inch is a help for weight distribution.
I have not done the swap, the PO did it, but I drive a older (71) 302/C4 with stock suspension and it drives well.. Top speed with stock rear end is only about 60.. AOD sounds ok, Im told sometimes a C4/different rear end is a good option as well as the AOD.

Does anyone have any pictures of engine mount setup they can post with Small Block Ford with Volare front end? Im needing to see a few ideas on this, thanks.
