Sucker born every minute
So I guess as the title says, there really is a sucker born every minute ... I can't believe the dealer has the guts to seriously ask that much for my truck.
I feel bad for the new owner - hope he pays for an extended warranty.

Most everyone should know that dealer's used car prices are highly inflated and you should be able to negotiate down just like buying a new car. The only sucker is the one that pays the full used car price or the full MSRP price on a new car.
Sounds like they were seriously inflating your trade in value and not giving you as good of a deal on the new one. But however the number worked out, as long as you're happy with the difference, that's all that matters.
Edit- just for reference Edmunds says trade on your truck is worth 11.5k, or dealer retail of 14.5k. So ,they were definitely stacking the numbers toward your trade. Those numbers are approximate since I don't know all the options you had, but I was very generous.

Now I paid $28.6K (prior to taxes, title and license) for my 06 F150 which had an MSRP of $37.9K. I also got the 1.9% APR for 72 months and put nothing down. So I feel I got a great deal on my 2006 and received what I wanted for my trade and I believe I even got the truck at below invoice price.

Here is a link to NADA showing the truck I traded in and list items from KBB & Edmunds for Trade-In Value. Now keep in mind it's been just over a month since I traded the truck in, so the values have decreased slightly.
NADA:

So you can see there is a wide range of value from NADA, KBB and Edmunds. I had informed the dealership I was only willing to negotiate using the NADA price structure and we went from there. Now I considered my truck to fall into the good to excellent catagory, even after the accident.

The `04 is a 3 model year old truck, and I think the 35% depreciation is pretty typical.
V8 - you also have to remember that you're going to get a better tradein on a 4x4 in Denver, in the winter. I'd bet the resale isn't quite the same here in dallas.
So they'll do whatever they can and tell you whatever they think you'll buy into. Gotta stick to your guns and not let them take you for a ride!
