Hello all I am looking for an article that was referred to me by another FTE member.
I have a 46 ford and was told I could use a mustang gas tank. I read the article and decided to go that route but now that I am ready I can't find the article nor the forum, Can you help?
Sara, the Mustang tank should fit on the '42 and up truck frame. I measured up the tank in a '66 Mustang I have here, and it is a near drop in for my '46. From '42 and up 1/2 ton frames are about the same width. I know you had some major frame work done on your truck, perhaps it's not even a truck frame.

Since you still have the factory fuel filler sticking out of the cab, you could go with the factory tank (as long as you still have room under the seat). I'm in Illinois, but I got a factory tank I'm not using if you can find a way to get it home. It's not new by any means but it didn't leak when I took it out.
It might be the easiest way to go, and you could always change to a frame mounted tank at a later date.
Sara, you might want to re-read the tech article also. You might be mixing up 2 different measurements. The tank in the article was 32" to the outer edge of the lip on the tank. The tank actually measure something less than that (if the lip is 1" then the tank would be 30" -- it might be even less than that). The guy that wrote the tech also said that the bigger tanks (20 gallon +) were smaller yet, and that might be what Gary has. Also in the tech the guy mentioned that he did take off about 1/2" off the bottom of the rail to make the opening a another inch wider.
If you do decide to go this way, and if you look for a used tank, you might also want to look at the Ford Falcon tank. I am not sure that they are identical for dimensions, but if they are you might be able to have better luck and price for the Falcon -- since it is overall less desireable than the Mustang. Just from looking at the tanks in cars, I think they are basically the same tank. I'll see if I can get some measures for you (my '63 is parked about 3 hours away).
