292 oil pressure

Ok I'm worried, I'll air check my oil guage tonight but sitting in a heated shop idling my 292 produces 7-10 PSI oil (on a aftermarket guage) any ideas??? It's a newly rebuilt motor wth less then a hour running time.

Just curious did it get new cam bearings? Does it still have a stock cam?

The oil pressure specs for the 292 from the factory was 45-50 psi at 2000 rpm.

That seems pretty low but I don`t know what it should be at a hot idle. Give Hank a call and see wht he says about that.

New cam bearings yes, new camsaft same size and type lobes.

Other then the block itself the only things in that motor refubished is flywheel, crankshaft and 3 connecting rods. Everything else internal is brand new.

Just curious if you are running a Fram oil filter.I had an issue one time where my oil pressure dropped to next to nothing while idling.I swapped the Fram oil filter for a Purolater one and everything was fine again.

May have a bad oil pump relief, a plugged filter (and yes, I agree never use Fram... use Purolator or PowerFlo), or an oil galley plug missing. I would think it would be an oil galley plug missing, as they are simple to forget. Sometimes they pop out if not properly installed.

Usually 10psi per 1000 rpm is a good baseline, but 10psi at idle on a brand new engine is definately low.

Did you change your oil after break-in and inspect for debris?

I don't know how you broke it in, but I've always followed this method.

-Fill crankcase with Rotella oil (contains zinc), plus one can GM EOS (zinc additive). This is done to prevent wiping a cam lobe or lifter.
-Preset your timing as best you can
-Prime fuel system to avoid excessive cranking
-Prime oil system
-Start engine and immediately bring to 2000 rpm, check vital signs, adjust timing to ballpark to avoid overheating, vary rpms between 2200 and 1500 to lubricate cam properly for 20 minutes.
-Shut down
-Drain oil and inspect for metal filings, cut open filter and inspect
-Refill crankcase with Rotella and install new filter
-Break in rings with road driving, avoid lugging engine
I've followed this method many times and have not yet had a bad break-in, wiped cam or bearing.

If there is a wiped bearing the oil pressure will be low. I'm still betting on my previous suspicions though... it isn't too often that a bearing gets wiped, and if it idles really well than the cam is probably OK too. But it is important to check the oil.. some metallic shimmer is usually ok but be suspicious of anything excessive.

There is an oil filter study available on the internet if you do a search which is pretty good reading.I quit buying Fram after reading the study and generally use either Purolater or if I go to the U.S. I stock up on the Motorcraft ones from Wal-mart as they sell them there for about $3 U.S..

I always use Motorcraft for some reason or other, I like to see Ford filters when I open my hood.
After the holidays give Hank a call and see what his thoughts are, you may need help on this.
