No Power on hills- 7.3 Non-Turbo

I have an 90 F-450 Wrecker with a non-turbo 7.3 and a 5spd that has no power on hills. Empty, loaded same thing- Dangerously slow(lucky to maintain 25mph). Runs fine otherwise, no problem on the highway, stop lights, 12mpg. Has new fuel filter and K&N air filter, 3" magnaflow exhaust. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Not sure on the axle ratio. I know It was changed at one time to get higher speeds on the highway without high revs. Not really sure on the Rs going up a hill, I usually cant make it past or have to downshift in to 2nd or 3rd and the Rs are high. Short hills are not that big a deal but its long hils that kill it.

Is this a new problem or has it always been a dog?

Get the timing checked, and if that doesn't work, maybe it's time for a new pump and injectors.

Thanks for all the suggestions every one. In answer to your question Spectramac I bought the truck recently but was told by the previous owner it was a dog on hills so I assume it been an on going problem. I see you are in Monroe I am in Arlington. Any suggestions on a good Diesel shop?

Oh a local!

My Dad and I have a shop, but we are pretty busy building engines at the moment. If you get around Monroe at all we could take a look at it and give you an opinion or two. We could stick a light on it and see what the timing is set at. I'll send a PM to you with my number.

I would also recommend Northland Diesel Service up in Bellingham for any pump/injection work you need done. That's who we've got our pumps through for years with no problems.
