I'll give it a shot. Air is drawn in thru the slots around the top of the air cleaner. The mesh inside the air cleaner is coated with oil which traps some of the dirt. The heaver paticles of dirt fall down into the oil in the bottom of the air cleaner. It's not 100% fool proof as some dirt does get into the engine. I hope this clarifies how it's supposed to work.
Adding to Barry's description; oil bath air cleaners rely on the momentum of dirt being heavier than air to cause the dirt to be trapped in the oil. The air is sucked into a maze where it takes a sharp turn. The heavier dirt can't make the turn, so it ends up in the oil.
Small dirt particles do get past the oil bath air cleaner.
Glad to see somebody else who appreciates the finer things in life like a classic Flying Circus skit. That's what we need on this board - a little more culture.
