[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Aug-02 AT 03:35 PM (EST)]I will have gasoline leaking from the bottom of my Single downdraft carburetor when I shut off the engine (not all the time). I am on my second carburetor. The first I rebuilt and I had the problem so I purchased a replacement (rebuilt) from Little Dearborn and have the same problem. I have adjusted the float to lower the gas in the bowl but the problem is still there. Could it have something with fuel pressure? When I watch for the problem I never see it. I will find dark brown gas stain on the intake air manifold a day later. My engine is the M series 226 cubic inch 95 horsepower. Truck runs great and has been fully restored. The exhaust manifold heat riser has been removed as parts are no longer available and the shaft holes are plugged. Any help?
What do you have for an air filter, Bill? My oil bath still has residual leaks even though I converted it to paper. Maybe your stains aren't gas. Also, could your M series be a 254? Across the head will be 8MTH-6050.

Thank you for your reply. My enging has the marking as followes 1HA-6050. You talked about the air cleaner. I have a air cleaner that only the top cover comes off and under that is a fiber filter. With the top cover off the unit is still sealed and will not come apart. I have the brought it to little Dearborn and to a man that had a service shop in the 50's and they do not understand it. I cleaned the unit during restoration and see no seam. Can you offer any more help on the air cleaner? I would like to get the correct unit for the truck. When I see what I think is gas on the intake manifold there is also a strong gas smell.
It sounds like a 226 all right and if you smell gas, that is probably what you have. The bottom half of the air cleaner, if it is like mine, is double walled, with maybe 3/4" space between the walls. There were small holes on the inside that allowed oil to fill this space. It then saturated the fiber filling to collect the dirt. I converted mine to a paper filter by cutting the bottom half of the top off. I am still getting residual oil on the inside which stains the paper filter.
