Hey guys, first time I've been in the Excursion section, I'm usually lurking in the Van section.
Anyway, I want more towing capacity then my 2000 4.6L E-150 has so I've been checking out the options and a used Excursion seems like a good deal, even if the mileage is in the toilet for a gasser. 90% of my use is towing my race car and the little 4.6L in the van gets crap for mileage doing 75mph with the trailer/car so it's a wash.
Right now there's a '01 4x4 V10 Excursion with 136k miles at a local Chevy dealer and I'm tempted to go look at it. They've got it priced at $14k, but I'm thinking about offering significantly less, like $9k since no one is buying these things right now. High mileage doesn't scare me, since I do all the maintenance myself.
Is there anything specifically that goes bad on these Excursions that I should check for? I know the misfire due to coil packs since I've gone through that with my van, but I figure there's got to be something else too.
I've had my 2000 limited 4x4 V10 since it was new. Currently it's at 148k and besides changing the rotors in front at 117k and a spark plug a couple of years back after a heavy rain, it's all been just routine maintainance.
Most people on this site will recommend a diesel Ex for towing and longevity, and I wouldn't disagree as I still have my 89 F-250 with the 7.3 (also since new) and it's got about 240k on it and still feels like it ought to be good for at least 500k. But with the current low resale value on a V10, there is no reason not to scoop one up, even with close to a 150k on it. (Besides, the V10 is just so great to drive, you can't help ending up with a BSG). And it would just take way too long to recoup the premium a diesel commands if price is a concern.
At any rate, from checking out plenty of the Super Duty threads, I think a properly maintained V10 Excursion will last a heck of a long time.
14k seems to be very high. I purchased an 01 EX 4x4 V10 Limited with 82,000 miles last year from a dealer for 11k. Since then I have replaced rotors and pads, tires, and ball joints.
I bought my 01 X just a few months ago with 114k for just under $10k. There are a few times where I cringe at the pump, but overall 'm very satisfied. I typically get 13.7 mixed driving and as hi as 17 on the highway. I only towed my 6200 lb camper once sicne I got the X for a short 100 mile trip and the computer showed 9 mpg for that trip (only about 30 miles of that was interstate) - about the same I got with my 00 F150 5.4.l, but a lot easier towing.
