Noise in Front Wheel

I have a clicking or slapping sound in driver's front wheel. Noise on rotation, gets faster with rotation of wheel. (Like a stone in the tire.) Can not find anything stuck in tread, any ideas... need things to look for.

Jack it up, take the weight off the tire and check to see how much play you have in the bearing. If there is excessive play, the bearing's shot and you get to replace the entire hub, it's unitized. While you're at it, take the tire off and check to see if your caliper moves freely, mine was seized, which put pressure only on one side, thus taking out the bearing.

If the bearing's toast, here's my thread, you might read through it if you're doing the work yourself. Also, invest in a manual. (I use Haynes)

The exact same thing happened to me: the right front caliper seized (I replaced it in January) and about 2 weeks ago, the ABS light comes on and I hear all these very unusual noises from the right front wheel. Turns out the bearing was shot. Because I was out of town visiting relatives, I had no choice except to take it to a dealer, who replaced the right front hub and that corrected the problem. I think a hub costs around $400 if you end up doing it yourself. If you go to the dealer, it will cost you around $550. (My experience in Georgia).

I think I may have the same problem. Its a lower pitched thump more than a click though. It's very much more noticable at 20-30 mph. Seems to mosty go away above that, and goes away even at that speed if I drag the brakes just a bit. Any ideas if this is the same thing? Is it safe to drive like this, both in terms of safety, and in terms of doing more expensive damage?

Well, my update.. I lifted the wheel that was making the noise and spun it by hand... (ps I have a 2wd) it turns out it was the center cap on the alloy that was clicking. Took it off and found that the last tire shop (last month) broke off two of the retaining clips inside the cap. This is the same shop that asked me not to come back because I only go there for them to mount tires I buy over the internet for better prices.

gabeyd, mine was doing the same thing, it would go away going around curves also. I don't think that it is going to cause any dangerous problems, and as I said, it's a unitized assembly, you end up replacing the whole thing anyway. I just got tired of the noise, and as it gets worse, the vibration. Do as I said above, at least you'll know, then you can start shopping for the best prices on parts.
