I think 15-17 is in the normal range. My '97 4.6 is 13-16 (mostly city).

I have a 04 Heritage 4X4 with a 4.6 My high is 19.644 (on a trip) my low is 17.013 and my average is 17.846. I run K&nN, airfilter Flowmaster cat back exhaust, Extang Tonneau Cover and a Hyper Tech Programmer. For economy I set my RPM at -500 and all my shift points at -500 RPM. It's where I get the best fuel mileage. If I'm towing my boat on a long trip and a motorcyle in the back to FL for Bike Week/Fishing trip combo I Set every thing at +500. Doesn't help the fuel milage but it sure runs better.

That's about what I get on my '98. Pretty consistantly 16 with a mix of highway/surface street driving. I'm not sure if it's even possible to consistently get 20 out of these things.

'99 4.6L 4x4 get 12-13 around town. 12-13 hauling a load on the H-way it seems, (3 300lb dirt bikes, 3 Dudes and gear).
Oh well?
Is this not normal?
Cheers!

Drive 55 mph, set the cruise, then sit back and relax. That's how I get the 20 plus highway figures. Running around town, I get the more typical 16 to 18 mixed. I now have 160k miles on the truck.

I get anywhere between 15-17 in the summer months and 13-16 in the winter, with my 97 4.6 4x4 3.55 gears. The highest I got was 19.5 on a one day trip for a parade. I have a K&N filter and Access roll up cover.

When you guys say you use a K&N filter to help your mileage, are you just changing the stock filter, or are you changing the cold air intake also?

My truck just has the drop in filter. I'm not sure how much the filter helped with the milage. The filter maybe added 1-3 mpg for my truck I guess.

Most are just referring to the air filter. My increase from just the air filter ranged from 1 to 2 mpg increase over the paper filters I was using. K&N's most used CAI is the FIPK, fuel injection performance kit that improves air flow as well as uses a K&N reusable air filter.

I used to have a 97 4x4 4.6 liter. I was lucky to push 12 miles to the gallon no matter where I drove. 15 on the highway if I was lucky. I by no means have a lead foot. I have since gave the truck to my brother and upgraded to the 5.4 liter. Might as well same gas milage more power. You could always try and drive with your tail gate down to get better milage.............Just kidding, haha

I have 161K on my 97 4.6 and average 15 to 18 in combined driving. I was getting 16 plus on a constant basis before I removed the bed cover and installed a cross bed tool box. I needed the box worse than the cover so I pay the price.

I still get 20 to 21 on the intersate, depending on how heavy my foot is.

What type of bed cover did you have that helped out?

I still have it. It's one of those vinyl covers that folds and is held in place by clamps. It's a tri-fold design. All I know that since I removed it and went with the toolbox, my mileage has dropped.

Careful with the fiberglass covers. I had one on my truck and I took it off to put my motorcycle in the bed and realized that I got another 60 miles to my tank, not to mention it performed better without that massive weight on the back. I am sure the tri folds are much lighter and will help air flow.
