56 Brake Problem

Friends,
My 56 250 has a stock brake system. I recently lost my brake lights. Both tail lights work, left turn signal works, but right turn signal and both brake lights do not work. I replaced the stop switch on the back of the master cylinder. I have checked and rechecked my wire connections and checked tail light bulbs. What am I forgetting? Since the stop switch works off the master cyl, is there any chance that the problem could be in the master cyl? Thanks

Clarence

Two things I have had problems with in the past..
1. If the brake light switch is activated by MC pressure, the passage that feeds fluid pressure, or the line or junction block that feeds pressure to it can back up and become clogged with sludge...May need to unclog/flush/bleed...
2. The socket that the bulb fits into can be old or faulty, have you checked for signal and brake light with a meeter to the socket posts?

Just some ideas... Oh, and I tried for a long time to fix one pressure switch, untill I found out a PO had unhooked it and put a mechanical switch on the pedal..

Take the two wires that hook to the MC switch and touch together, the lights should light up if you got power to the switch

55peif has the easiest test for that one. There's no substitute for a good volt meter with a continuity function, especially one that beeps. The meters probably end up saving you more money than they cost because you don't end up buying new parts that may be good. Plus you can track down problems to isolate them. Another easy test for that switch is to take off the wires, put both probes of a continuity tester on each post and push the brake pedal. If you don't have continuity, the switch is bad. You could also leave the feed wire on and check voltage on the second switch post when you push the brakes. No voltage, then the switch is bad. If you're switch is good, start checking joints in the wiring, and other things like packrat 56 said.

I had a problem with the brake lights or one rear signal not working, can`t remember which one but it was a dirty contact in the signal switch that to be take it apart and cleaned.
