Cam is finally in!

After three days I finally got it done. I put the Crane truck cam in, 5.8L throttle body, new accel 15lb injectors and steel timing gears. I had the heddman headers, but they were so cheaply made and designed, I'm sending them back. They didn't even fit flush to the head ans had weld spatter all over the flanges, also the gasket provided didn't line up with the bolt holes and ports, as two bolt hole weren't even cut into the gasket. The truck definately gained some *****. Not as much as I thought, but I only have 50 miles on it so far with the new stuff, hopefully the computer will make some changes. The throttle body helped stop the dip in rpms when I revved it out of gear. I didn't have to remove the AC condensor, just flipped it over the engine when I needed to get to the front. Thers not a major lope to the exhaust sound, but you can definately tell something is up. Thanks for all the input before doing the swap.

Cool. I'm just about to do the cam thing myself.

How is the low end?

its hard to tell yet, I'm not gonna drive it too hard until another 50 miles and trhe computer adjusts. First gear is quick as lightning though, the little power kick at 2100 rpms moved up to about 24-2500. It is definately a noticeable power difference so far.

Are you using the 503901 cam and do you tow?

Thanks again for posting!

I have the 503905 its the crane truck cam from summit racing.
I have a small 16ft aluminum boat I tow, but I hardly ever have to get out of 5th gear going up hills before the swap.

i dont understand why ur hedmens were so "cheap" mine were flawless. that one bolt hole that isnt there is for the engine pick up point. everything else worked great for me.

i run the same cam and run a factory tach. the power difference is immediate from right off idle to WOT. u can feel more mid-range, around 2400-3000 rpm, and it definatly skoots along just fine.

i dont tow but occassionaly haul stuff and it does just fine. running just stragith pipe w/ one cat (stock cat/y pipe) u could tell it was camm'd but a slight lope but the idle was smooth.

i did all what nastruk did but the 351 tb as i dont see the need for it...well and injectors but mine were good.

I didn't have a problem with my Heddmans either, but I'm not too picky about headers. They all have a little weld spatter and very few rest flat against the head unless you spend $700 on a custom set. The bolt holes aren't there because they are designed for a carb head. When I put mine on I had a carbed engine laying there and the holes were all there to bolt up to it.

Hey Nastruk,
How do your valves/lifers sound with the new cam? I put in the Crane H-260 last year and the lifters are still making quite a bit of noise. I had some problems with lifter pre-load...ended up with 0.080 which is kind of out of range. Where did your preload end up.

Thanks

Did you replace your lifters when you did the cam and if you did, what brand?

TIA,

Vince

Crane lifters. The standard OEM replacemnts they reccomend with the H-260 for a 300. I tried a couple different oil grades but it didn't make much of a difference. Oil pressure is fine.

I got the sealed power brand SLP-HT-900. It was really noisy at first when I was breaking in the cam, but quieted down after about 10 minutes of running while changing the rpms. I always soak them in transmission fluid before I put them in though and then ran a quart of transmission fluid for the first 100 miles. I just finally changed the oil yesterday and put in the usual 10W-30 and no noise anymore. Same deal though, oil pressure was fine, but it was noisy, the pressure went down a little running the quart of tranny fluid though, but all is back to normal now.

I didn't have much time to deal with lifter preload, I didn'y mill the head or anything, I only relapped in the valves. I torqued all the rocker arm nuts to 20 ft/lbs or whatever the manual said and happy with the results. The truck has over 186k on it, if it were brand new I'd bother, but I didn't have the time or the micrometer.

Single pattern cams need a very good head design to work well. In stock or mildly ported trim, the 300 head does not fit that description. The Comp offerings also have tight LCA's which adds overlap and reduces computer compatibility. As a general rule, you can never go wrong with a Comp 268. It will always do much better than stock, but there is probably a better cam out there. When I get my new engine built and broken in I will probably do the Comp 260 with 1.73 rockers.
