well about a month ago i installed some shorty headers on my expy, and soon after that i noticed a ticking noise, which sounded like and exhaust leak, well i tightend all the header bolts and the ones on the collector also and it didnt go away. well i rigged up a listning device with some tubes to see if i could pin point the leak, i couldnt find anything. i finnaly came to the conclusion that it might be one of the fuel injector solinoids. could anyone give me any other suggestions what it might be, i now its not a valve tap becasue that is a very distinct noise. i dont want to have to take it to a shop and pay 70 an hour for someone to look at it i like to do all of my own work, well with a little insight from all you fellas on this awsome fourm, which i am a proud to be member of.
How many miles on it?
When I had a ticking noise, it turned out to be the impeller on the water pump had sheared off. (The truck drove fine like this without any sign of overheating).
Just an idea.
it has 114k miles on it, i dont think it is the water pump because it was still ticking when i ran it with the serpintine belt off, the noise gets louder while in drive or under load and goes with the speed of the engine, the noise is comming from the passenger side near the back of the engine, im going to check the spark plugs once it cools down and if its not that then i have a good reason to install the 42 lb injectors, and hf fuel pump i did just put on a supercharger might as well make the fuel flow faster too. any other ideas are very much appreciated

I also had a ticking/clicking noise on my '01 Expedition 5.4L coming from the passenger side rear of the engine. It would get louder with engine speed. Had my Ford dealer look at it (due to extended warranty)- turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold gasket. Possible that your situation may be similar due to recent header install?
The ticking noise could be a coming from the headers. I installed headers and at times hear what could be described a light ticking noise. I have been told by a shop that deals with them all the time that this normal.
well i guess i will just deal with the noise, i am happy now anyway i just got done putting in my powerdyne supercharger and transgo tugger reprograming kit for my 4r100 tranny. this time i got the right kit well thanks for all the help it is very much appriciated.
