I am looking at a 98 ranger xlt reg cab-4cyl stick 2wd-rear slider, bedliner, cd, good ac. no power options beside steering and brakes. 89k miles. It is that ford purple(i know). Truck is suppose to be pretty clean. I was told the pass side was repainted and repaired at one time as the last owner hit one of those orange highway barrels a few yrs back. Only concern is owner stated-possible throwout bearing rattling-stated he replaced it 2 yrs ago for same noise and it cured it for a month then started again. Noisey when clutch engaged but stops when released. Is this a common issue on this trans? he is asking 2500 but im sure cash talks. I only need it due to my 76f250 460bb is not making it past gas stations and i need a 2nd vehicle for trash runs and just to give my good car a brake. What do you guys think. Btw-if i need to do a clutch it would get sent out as that is not a job for me to even think about doing. need info soon as im looking at it sat am..
Thanks Larry
No, it's not a common problem with rangers. When he replaced the throwout bearing, he should have replaced the clutch disc, and presureplate as well. What ever the case, something has gone arye, bad parts, not installed properly, whatever. I've had 5 rangers, only 1 was an auto, I have never had a tranny or clutch issue to date. With the abuse my current 4x4 gets, I would suspect a center force is in it's future, but so far, so good.
i never heard a sound in my truck and its a 97. when the clutch was going i sort of didn't work right, would not stay engauged properly. no noises. also if you can see it before you buy it, make sure the repaint isn;t bubbly(this means it's rusting underneith).
You might ask if the pilot bearing was replaced when the throw out bearing was changed? I have seen in other cars & trucks when clutch jobs were done with out doing this, there was noise soon after.Good luck.Alan
well the guy never emailed me back after i called him and asked to send pics before i drive their so his loss. im not desperate for the trucki just wanted a new toy. either he sold it tonight or just to lazy to use the camera he said was in the truck.. owell im not crying over it. if he still has it he has my info. if i get word on it ill post.. thanks guys for ur answers
