No 4x4 low light on dash

No 4x4 low light on dash
2001 5.4 L XLT with 48,000 miles. Just yesterday noticed that the 'Low' indicator lamp in the dash does not illuminate. However, upon start up it does light up with the other lamps and then promptly goes off. I could not hear the transfer case engage the low gear like you can hear the high gear. Any thoughts? 4x4 high seems to be operating just fine.
On another topic, anyone have any suggestions on what type of code reader to buy that could be good for both a Jeep and Expy?

Just went out to try what you suggested. It worked. However, I don't ever remember having to be in neutral in the past to shift to low. Also, I can hear a clunk when I shift from gear to gear. Is that normal? I guess I really hadn't paid all that much attention to it before.
