My 2000 Expy 5.4 A4WD has recently developed a vibration, It seems to be comming from the rear and I only notice it when I step on the gas from a stop and usually when I'm turning at the same time. You can only really feel it in the floor or pedals and its real quick, once I'm leveled out on the road it wont do it anymore. I'm stuck, I was thinking u-joints but it doesent really fir the symptoms. Maybe a rearend fluid change is in order! any ideas on what I may have going on here?
I have a similar type of thing going on with my '99. I have been told it's a sign that the transfer case needs to have it's fluid changed, but I haven't gotten around to changing mine yet to see if that's the case.
Actually, I would think it is rear end chatter and not tied to the t-case given that you say it shudders while doing a low speed turn. Perhaps a diff fluid change with the proper amount of friction modifier added.
On edit: You do have a limited slip (posi) differential don't you?
I just went out and spent a small fortune on Royal Purple for the front diff, rear diff and transfer case. Do I need friction modifier for the rear diff if I use Royal Purple?
This is from the Royal Purple website and also on the bottle.
All viscosities of Max-Gear are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary.

yeah after I posted I went out to check the bottle and thats what I read. Sounds like I'm good to go. I hope this Purple stuff is as good as I hear.
Replaced the clutch packs in a 2003 Expedition posi traction and refilled with $$$$ genuine Ford fluids. Was under the assumption (faulty or otherwise) that the Ford fluid would contain all necessary chemicals. Since the car still has a moderate shudder when turning corners after all of this work is the friction modifier still necessary??

Thanks for any insight.

You could always buy a 4oz bottle of friction modifier from the dealer, put it in through the fill hole and drive it a bit and see what happens. It won't hurt if it wasn't needed.
