i'm in flywheel hell
i put the 157 tooth flywheel on my 302 and the starter wouldn't engage the flywheel in my truck. i was told to get the 164 tooth flywheel so i did. i got the flywheel and starter off of a 73 bronco and put everything back together and i have the same exact friggin problem. i counted the teeth and compared my old and new flywheels and the new one is noticeably larger. i am running out of time, money and patience. is there more than one starter for the big flywheel?

Hi. I'm in that same place you say you were in. Did you find out what to do? I just found a flywheel with 168 teeth. It appears to line up with the starter. Now I'm trying to find out if fits a 67 289. It bolts on and fits in the bell housing. It doesn't appear to have a cast in balance weight. There is a big hole drilled in it that could be for balance. Any help would be great.

The difference between the manual and automatic starter is that the manual has a longer snout, resulting in a pinion drive gear that protrudes less. The automatic with its shorter snout has the gear projecting about a quarter inch further. The location relative to the flywheel axis may or may not be the same.
There are starter snouts that locate closer to or further from the flywheel axis, have plain or threaded attaching holes and such, but I don't know the intricacies. It gets confusing.
