i just rebuilt my 351w this winter and when i put it back into the truck it had a little hestitation when i stomped on it so i had the holley card rebuilt and now it works better but it doesn't have any more power than it did before. i put an rv cam in, new oem pistons, ground out smogbumps, had a profesional valve job and new lifters and new valve springs, plus all new bearings and seals. i really expected some more power. i have noticed lately though that when in 4x4 and starting away in first gear there is a little spark knocking. i'am wondering if the timing should be advanced or retarded for the new cam i put in
what is the compression ration of your build- retarding timing will affect power neg and obviously help detonation but thats something to play with.
Porting can be very helpful or it can hurt low end grunt if the porting increases volume at the cost of velocity. Also Holleys can be hard to set up correctly. Since I'm definitely not good at settng up the fine aspects of a build like timing and carb I plan on using a dyno and an expert- should be well worth the $$.
I'm a 335 guy learning myself as I'm building a W right now- or at least have it out and torn down...
could be cr isn't the culprit but a lot of folks either build or have engines built with parts that do not make the most out of the 87 they slurp. Compression and quench are funny things and I'm still looking for folks who talk about that on this forum...search's aren't giving me much to go on.
