I was wanting to know how you take off an axle on a 9" rear end. I'm gonna have to pull one to see what spline count I have. I had some guy at a transmission place say I had to take the differential out first and that just sounds stupid to me considering the axle goes into the carrier. Any help? Thanks
What year 9"? My old cougar I had a 1969 9" and the 4 bearing retainer bolts at the wheel was all that held it in. Needed a slide hammer to remove it. Later models might have a c clip inside the pumpkin. My dana 35 front axel has a c-clip on just one side. Would be good to web search for an exploded view or call your local Ford dealer parts dept to look it up on their microfish.
Lift one side of axle up and remove tire and place a jack stand on that side. Pull the drum off the rear axle. Place a drain pan under that axle. Loosen the 4 bolts holding the axle on. Pull out axle, and count the number of splines on axle.
I have looked and taken off quite a few axles and this is my personel opinion, and it seems like, if the trucks a F150 it will have the 31 spline axle, if the truck is a F100 it will have the 28 spline. Has anybody else noticed this,?
