New owner of '56 F100.. Have some questions

I am new to the forum and just bought my 1956 F100 last week, something I have been waiting to do for a long time. I now have a few questions on some of the first items I am addressing with my truck:

Hood hinges: How do you know if they are good? The hood is not currently attached. The hinges are mounted to the body. Should there be any tension on hinges with the hood off? Right now I can freely move the hinge arms.

Power Steering: I plan on keeping the stock straight axle. I would like to add power steering for additional ease of driving. Right now I am looking for something simple and low budget. I happily will dig in junk yards for parts. I have read posts which discuss using a toyota ps system. What years and models would I be looking for? Are these usually found easily?? Is there a better option given my initial plan is not to make a change out the front end. Would a later year ford ps system be an option? I am really open on this subject.

Thanks in advance everyone. This wiill be the first of many posts picking everyone's brain.

Toyota 4x4 Power Steering box 79-mid year 84 is what you're looking for. When Ferguson777 sees this post, he'll probably send you a copy of the tech article he put together. It's a pretty easy swap. Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome to the forum. I knew my hinges were good when I saw the trash truck drive away with them in it. Seriously tho, I wanted to keep the stock hinges. They appeared to be in good condition but would barely hold the hood up. There was a certain ritual I had to go through to get the hood to close, then on the hiway the air would force the back of the hood up about an inch. When I heard that they weren't much better when the trucks were new, I gave in and bought a front flip kit. JMO...Good Luck

The hinges hardly ever wear out, the problems come with improper adjustment or other's modifying them.
The Toyota conversion is definitely the best and easiest you can do. Ferguson 777 should be along soon or PM him for a copy of our steering options article, it will tell you everything you need to know.
PS: Welcome to the forum and to classic truck ownership.

Congrats on the purchase of the best looking truck on earth and welcome to FTE. I've seen the Toy set up installed and I think it is a very nice set-up. No-Limit has a new rack/pinion set-up for straight axles now and you can get the LD on page 70 of the Feb issue of Custom Classic Trucks or call 888-297-6032 for more info. I would avoid trips to the "junk yard" for steering.suspension, and brake components, as the truck already has a load of these and you don't need more. Watch other projects for budget ideas and plan ,plan, plan. Do a search for more in-depth information on any subject. Good luck and have fun.
