My air filter is orange, so I'm guessing it's a Fram, but there's no part number on it. I looked through the Fram catalog at the auto parts store, but I couldn't find it. The truck is a '56, and I don't know what year the 312 is. It's got aluminum Thunderbird valve covers, and a Thunderbird Special air filter cover, but that doesn't tell me anything! The parts guy said for me to bring the filter in and match it up? I thought it would be easier to ask the knowledgeable crew in here first. Also, I did a search in the 312 section for oil filters, but found nothing. It currently has a Fram PH8A on it. Is that what I should replace it with, or is there a better brand? And lastly, engine oil. The bulk oil we use at Mercedes is Mobil 1 syn 0w40. I think that might be overkill on an old Ford motor? I was just gonna get some 10w30 Quaker State. Thanks everyone!
Just take it in and see if they can match it. I bought a '60 with a stock 292 and there was an air filter that didn't match a single one at the auto parts store. If they can't match it b/c it's some WIERD size that no longer exists, just get a new air cleaner housing with a large element.
As far as the air filter, they had an oil bath on the original engines. Matching my paper one up in the store was the best way for me. I bet you have to do the same.
I run motorcraft oil and filter (FL-1A and 10-W40) in my y-block, but thats the same as I have run in every ford I owned up until my current explorer. It requires 5-W30 and still uses the FL-1A.
I bet you get as many opinions as there will be posts. LOL
