Recently added 3/4 tank of gas to top up tank. Drove truck 2 minutes and parked. An hour later went and started truck. With engine at idle, started to have power surges and drops in rpm. Problem is there at very slow speeds and when idling. Thought it might be bad gas (water or other dirt) clogging injectors. Added injector cleaner to gas. No improvement. Added methol hydrate to burn off any water in tank. No improvement. Ran tank almost empty and re-filled with 91 octane gas. Still no improvements.
Truck runs fine at higher speeds with no problems and no missing of spark plug firing. Acceleration is fine. Drop in rpm is to about 400rpm and surge is to about 1200 rpm. Have to put transmission in neutral and have foot on gas peddle at stops to prevent stalling.
Any suggestions would be welcome before I take it to a Ford Dealer. Thank you all for you assistance.
Run a search as there are plenty of threads on the subject. There is a good one on the FTE somewhere about cleaning the IAC. It is an easy job. The IAC is located on the top of the motor bolted to the upper intake manifold. Two bolts and one wire lead.
Glen any solution? The IAC is the Idle Air Control valve. A bad one can do this. Can one really go bad at the drop of a hat like this? Maybe I guess if a peice of carbon breaks off and doesn't allow free movement of the plunger inside. Get the codes read like Mrshorty says.
