Hello Everyone
I put a rebuilt water pump on my 1992 F150 3 years and 4 months ago.
Now after 42,000 miles the rebuilt water pump from Napa is going out.
First I thought the noise was the belt.
With the belt off I could move the fan up and down and feel the play in the water pump.
After replaceing the belt, I've got, this low growing sound from the pump.
No water leaking out the weep hole.
This is one of those lifetime pumps, should I get this same pump from Napa.
How many miles should you get out of a rebuilt water pump???
More than 42000. Napa used to sell quality parts, but they sell pretty much the same chinese junk these days that autozone, pep boys, kragen, etc. are selling.
This site is sponsored by several vendors that sell quality name brand parts. Sometimes they cost less than parts stores, too. The volume and low overhead is great for the home mechanic. The only thing I buy from stores anymore are brake fluid, oil, and filters (still only Motorcraft).
Check out rockauto.com, jeffsbroncograveyard.com and you can pick up an OEM replacement water pump that will last just as long as the original did.
There shouldn't be any play. I had an old Volvo who's water pump did the same thing. There used to be a rattling noise when I'd start and stop the engine and I'd loose a little water over time but I never saw a leak. One day I happened to feel the fan and there was play in it so I looked down under at the weep hole and found a plug in it. I think the plug kept it from leaking real fast which is why I never saw fluid on the ground but there was definitely evidence of a leak. Although that sucker had many miles on it.
Agreed, I always get the "better" or possibly "application engineered" stuff if it's available and have had nothing but great luck with it. I do not bother with anything local except NAPA unless I just need oil or some other type of fluid, etc that is the same anywhere.
