Hey guys,
I am new to this site and have been lurking around for a little while and just recently picked up an 02 f150 4x4. Hopefully I am posting in the right section. I have auto locking hubs and I noticed when shifting into four wheel drive it takes a little while to engage. I engage the 4x4 and when I hit the gas it is still only in 2 wheel and I hear a tick...tick...tick....tick for a little while and a small clunk noise of it engaging. Not sure whats wrong or anything and truck is no longer in warranty. Appreciate any help you guys may have to offer. Thanks
It's not uncommon for it to take a few seconds to go into 4x4. It shouldn't take longer than a few seconds though.
For some more info on how the 4x4 system works on these trucks take a look at https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=309867
I always throw the tranny in Neutral before putting it into 4WD. It enguages a lot faster that way. But I always count to 1 or 2 before putting it back in gear.

You dont have auto locking hubs. The hesitation is the vacuum lines engaging a switch that activates 4wd. If it wasn't used that often, that may be the source of some of the clunk. You will get some noise with a 4wd. It's just the nature of the beast.
