770 Truck Avenger Fast Idle Qwirk??

Hello, I finally took the Rochester Slobberjet off my 460 which is in my 77 F250 4x4 Highboy and put on my new Holley 770 Truck Avenger. I'm really impressed with the added throttle response from off idle through out the whole power range, plus the mileage seems pretty good and it starts good with good driviblility. Seems like my truck has way more power then before.

I only have one quirk that I haven't been able to wing it of. Seems like the fast idle wants to keep staying on even after the engine is warmed up. You can blip the throttle and it will go off but the next time you normally accelerate, there it is fast idiling again. I've turned the electric choke housing all the way clockwise to make it kickout the soonest as possible but that hasn't helped. It's even been about 65 degrees the last couple of days.

I hooked the positive choke lead wire to the switched side of the starter solenoid. Any suggestions on this?? It's probably something simple but, I don't know what. I would hate to have to add a choke stove but, I would if I had too. My engine is built pretty much stock other then an Edlebrock Performer cam & intake and L&L Headers.

The switched side of the starter solenoid is only energized when you crank the engine over to start it. You need to find a hot in run only wire for the choke, do not use the coil + wire.

Well, I guess that makes pretty good since. I thought that wire had 12v all the time. Maybe not. Then that sounds like that would be the culprit.

Thanks for the tip. Where is the best place out under the hood to hook the choke?

I wish I had a good answer!!! I would start probing connectors with the key on until you find a good 12v source and then make sure it has a big enough gauge wire to carry the choke also. You might consider finding a fuse tap in the fuse block that is unused and run a wire from there. A test light is all you need to find the hot in run wire.

The ignition module has a hot in run power wire, but I would be careful tying into that, you don't want to create a new problem!

Thanks Putt, I've been reading a few old posts. Looks like most folks go with
a fuse tap to a source in the fuse box or you can hook to the back/white (stator) lead off the back of the alternator but, that may only be about 8 volts.

I think I may do the fuse tap deal. I think I bought some at Advance the other day. Cool, maybe that will make my choke lid stand on up and knock that fast idle off.

I'll post my results when I get it done.

Thanks Again!!

Use the stator wire from the alt. It is only hot when running and works fine on Holleys and Edelbrocks. This is where the factory electric chokes tapped into as well.

Thanks LxMan, I'm running the big 90 amp Lincoln alternator, hopefully it has that hook up. I'll check into it in the next day or 2. Much Abliged!!

That's what I have on my 460 in my truck. Just tap into the wire that goes to the "S" terminal on the back of the alt.

I thought the stator wire only had 8 or 9 volts on it? The Holley chokes are designed for 12v unless I have missed something...not the first time!!

It's about 9V, but it still works the Holley choke just fine.

Just thought I would post my results. I hooked my positive lead for the electric choke up to the white wire/ black stripe (stator wire) going to the alternator. It works great. She fast idles nicely when cold and the choke plate stands right on up good and straight. The fast idle kicks off and stays off.

I checked the voltage on the white (stator) wire with my meter before I hooked up the choke and it only checked 7.34 volts. But, it's plenty good enough to work the choke properly. I was glad I had enough slack in the wire to hook it on down on the stator wire.

Thanks for all the help and a big thumbs up for the Holley 770 Truck Avenger. I feel that it was money well spent and it does pretty much work good right out of the box, for me and my stock 460 anyway.
