Rebuild or Buy New Carbureter..500 or 600?

I will be running a 350 cruiser engine with an automatic in my 48 F-3. I am not interested in high performance or racing but I am interested in gas mileage. I will be running an Edelbrock Torquer manifold. I have a 600 CFM Holley electric choke carburetor that I picked up used and it has not been run in about 5 years. It appear okay but it is missing a piece of linkage that opens the rear barrels.

My question is this. Should I have the Holley rebuilt (I'd have hire it out since I know nothing about rebuilding a Holley) and try to find and replace the piece of missing linkage or should I just buy a new carburetor?

I don't want to spend a lot of money on this Holley, find out it is junk and have to start over. If I buy new I was thinking of going the Carter or Edelbrock route with either a 500 or 600 CFM carburetor or possibly another Holley 600. Which carburetor and venturi size would best suit my means? Thanks for your comments...

Vern

If you have to pay to get it rebuilt, then buy a new one. The 500 or 600, any brand, will work good.

I would use a 500 cfm Edelbrock, but loose the torker manifold. It's power band is 2500-6500 rpm and will not give great throttle respnose or the best mileage due to it being an open plenum manifold. You would be better off with a Performer dual plane intake or any dual plane intake.

Jimmy,

Thanks. I am using the Torker only because I already had it and did not want to buy a new one right now. Plans are to replace it with a Performer when I have the cash. I had this same intake manifold on a SBC 400 with a 600 Holley and got about 14MPG with it.

That's cool. I would Go with the Edelbrock carb for now and it may help to use a 1" 4-hole spacer.
