Whats the best oil to run in my 300? Its got 197,9XX miles and has a oil leak from I don't know where. P.O. ran Havoline straight 30 for 10 years and changed every 3K miles. I put 10W30 in this time but wondering what would be best for her.
if you don't mind the leak and can keep an eye on the level, the 10W30 is fine. If you want to stop the leak, try something heaver, or that Lucal junk. it's pretty gummy.
How serious is this leak? Is it just when the engine is hot? How often do you drive the truck?
I want to stop the leak period. But don't know where to start looking. I dont know if its just when the engine is hot,I just know the driver side of the block is covered in grease,oil,dirt,etc...I used to drive it daily, then I got the camry and didnt drive it hardly. It was a quart low last night. That "dummy" light wasnt BS'ing. It showed low pressue so I checked and it was low. Mines is a varible gauge,it isn't the one that is "On and Off".
I'm thinking I should go back to Straight 30,But not sure.
I would clean the engine up real good with a pressure washer and then see where the leak is coming from. Most likely it's either the valve cover or the pushrod cover, as someone else said.
Stick with 10w30 unless your pressure gets too low. At that point, you're probably not far from a rebuild anyway.
When it was low,the guage hung around the N,when I added more oil,it picked up to O and is staying there now. It could be a bad sending unit too. Already replaced it twice....
I filled her up with 5 1/2 quarts of Havoline 10W40 and the oil and dipstick are the same color.....went to the car wash and pressure washed the engine.....Now it don't want to run right....
Thicker is better for a high milage engine I have an 84 F-150 I6 with 230,000 I have been using 20-50 since 75,000 miles. I have had engine leaks and I will bet it's from the front and or rear seal. I have had very good luck with a liquid stop leak product Made by Winns it is supposed to swell the seals and has made a day and night difference. I you live where there is very cold weather I would use 20-40. I live in SC so it never gets real cold here.
Also check your crankcase ventillation valve if it is not opening then the crankcase stays at a positive pressure. It should be at a negative pressure. Positive pressure pushes the oil through the seals causing leakes.
The best way to stop the leak is to fix where its coming from.
That said, i'm guilty of the "thicker oil" treatment myself. Anything less than 50w in my six and it'll pour it right back out like water it seems. A brand new oil change lasted me less than 2 weeks before it was low of oil.
Refilled it with 20w-50, and it hasn't lost any measurable amount yet. Though that does tell me i need to fix the front seal leak.
get a ghasket kit, go from there, easy to put it, and doesn't cost too much, as for oil, on a 300 it really dont matter, your not going to kill it unless you put veggie oil in there or something. 10w30 is what i use, and 10w40 in the winter.
hey, to comment about what oil to use for your I6...
- I myself have a 1992 300 I6 with 221k miles on it, and i treat it really rough, a bit too rough come to think of it... well anyway i use Rotella T 15w-40 diesel oil and and one bottle of Hy-per lube and i change it ever 4k miles. and this truck still has the get up and go it always had. i have used Rotella 15w-40 for about 2 years and have noticed a slight power incress and better gas mileage. when i started useing Hy-per lube it to added/restored power and gas mileage. my gas mileage was at about 10mpg now its at about 13mpg. Hope this helps
