I HAVE A 84 FORD F-350 PICKUP, SINGLE REAR WHEEL, 2 WHEEL DRIVE, IN WHICH I'D LIKE TO CONVERT TO DUAL REAR WHEELS, FOR MORE STABILITY WHEN TOWING. DUAL WHEELS WILL NOT BOLT ON AS IS. MY REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY IN THE TRUCK IS A DANA, 8 LUG, WITH FULL FLOATING HUBS & DRUMS, AND 12 X 3 BRAKES. THE NUMBERS ARE 3.73 RATIO, E4TA, 60519-4. CAN I RETAIN THIS REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY, WHICH IS IN THE TRUCK NOW, AND JUST CHANGE HUBS & DRUMS, FROM A DUAL REAR END.? OR DO I NEED TO CHANGE THE WHOLE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY.? BODY - BED MODIFICATIONS ARE NOT A CONCERN. 2ND QUESTION-- AFTER 87, DID THEY MAKE DANA REAR AXLE ASSEMBLIES, THAT HAD FULL FLOATING HUBS & DRUMS, IN WHICH THE DRUMS COULD SLIDE OFF THE FLOATING HUB, AS WITH 1/2 TON TRUCKS AND REAR DRIVE CARS.? IF SO WOULD THESE NEWER HUBS & DRUMS FIT THE EARLIER REAR AXLE ASSEMBLIES, AS MY 84.? THANKS FOR ALL YOUR TIME GUYS. JOEL
You will need to buy the rear fenders and might have to cutt out the wheel openings more to allow the wheels to fit. Does your 350 have a flanged axle or a large hub coming out of the wheel? You might have a Dana 60 or a Sterling 10.25" axle.
Hello, I Do Know The Axle Assembly Is A Dana. It Does Have The Large Hub (full Floating Axle) Coming Out Of The Wheel. Again Body Mods Are Not A Concern, Due To Owning A Repair Shop. Thanks, Joel
Hello Bob, The wheel studs are long enough. But when you mount the inner dual wheel on , 2 things happen. 1--wheel interferrence at outer edge of. drum ( drum not deep enough ) which does not permitt wheel to lay flat against stud mounting surface. 2-- even if tire and rim did not have interference with drum and mounting surface, the inner tire has interference with leaf spring. I have not looked at a dual wheel drum and hub, but do know they are different than my single ones. this is why I ask if these dual wheel hubs and drums will swap on my single axle setup. My shop does classic auto sheet metal repair.
Have you though about those dually adapters? they allow you to run standard wheels, just four of them on the back instead of two. You basically put on 1 wheel, put the adapter on the studs, then put the other wheel on the adapter. I don't imagine they would increase your load capacity, but it should help with traction, and sway control for pulling trailers. Just a thought.

in my old forgetfull ways , I forgot that there used to be a company that made dual wheel kits for things like toyotas, half ton fords , etc.... when folks wanted to run duals for things like campers and such. do a search on google or yahoo, my dad actually bought one from them , but I think they still make them , and they were alot cheeper than all that sconversion , bob
Stay away from that crap those adaptors are JUNK
You will burn out your wheel bearings because they move the center line of the both wheels too far out so it burns out your outer wheelbearing.
If you want a dually truck you will have to find a 10.25 Dually axle and bolt it into the back of your truck. You will have to find a 10.25 from a dually P/U so its the right frame width a 10.25 from a cab and chassis is too narrow spring centers.
Personally if you want a dually truck get a dually truck you will have the bigger brakes heavier suspension etc you will have a true dually. The 10.25 does come with outboard drums I don't think I have ever seen a 10.25 with inboard drums like the old dana 60s-70s had years ago.
Thanks guys for all your ideas on this. I am shying away from adaptors due to bearing load and strength concerns. I would feel good about using dual wheel hubs and drums, if they would fit on my single wheel floating housing. Still don't know if they would fit. Probably will end up changing complete rear axle assembly, though. The reason i'm considering this conversion, is that this 84 has only 69,000 miles, 460 engine, 3.73 gear, oil, trans coolers, heavy duty sway bars and it's paid for. Also I have pair of slightly damaged repairable dually fenders. I still would have to change front hubs to match wheels. I have found out front hubs, rotors will swap on my spindles. Just don't know what I'll do yet. Thanks again---Joel
If you decide to not go the dually route. I would take those dually fenders off your hands. They are getting hard to find around me. Let me know and good luck.
