I have a 95 F250 with a 4.9 F.I. I6, auto trans. I am seriously considering swaping the 4.9 for a 5.8 H.O. I have the 5.8 already it's out of an 85 F150 ( I also have the C6 tranny that was behind it). My question is should I leave the engine basically stock and just replace the heads and intake, Or would I be better off stroking it to a 383 with better heads, intake, Etc? I plan to use it as a daily driver and tow vehicle. The 4.9 I have now is a gas hog (7-8 MPG), I would like to get a bit better milage and also power. Thanks to all who respond..
That's really up to you and what you want out of your truck. For your situation you may want to keep it more stock. You'll already notice so much gain over the 300-6 that it may be plenty. I would do the cam as well as the heads and intake and leave it at that. If you want more, you could always stroke it when rebuild time comes around.
I forgot to mention replacing the cam. I was thinking along the lines of the Comp Cams 260H. As for heads & intake I'm leaning towards the Edelbrock performer set (I might also use the Edelbrock cam.
The reason I'm thinking about the stroker is I just got through towing a 30' flatbed trailer with an International S1900 single axle semi truck on it 150mi. While the six did the job, I wasn't breaking any land speed records. I averaged about 40 mph. And no I don't plan on towing such loads regularly it would be nice to know I have the power to do so.
It would be nice to hear some specs from anybody who has a comparable set up (to what I'm thinking) to either the stockish 351W or the 383/393 stroker.
go here www.fordfuelinjection.com and read. if you six is only getting that mpg something is wrong. it should see hi teens . if you stroke figure no better then 10-12 mpg and that might be optimistic. if you put a 5.8 in your 95 it will need to be at that years specs for emissions etc... so take that into account as well. this can be done but will require some work to. would you be doing this yourself?
I will be doing the engine swap,I've switched from I6 to v8 before so no big deal. As far as the emissions go I'm not worried about it. I don't live in an emissions control state. Alao I don't understand the EFI systems. All I really know about them is they cost me alot of money when they don't work right. I spent $300 having two sensors changed on my 92 Ranger and it still didn't fix the problem...
that site will show you how to check for codes using a paperclip. and with our help you will find that efi is not that bad. you just need to get an understanding of how things work. efi truely is the way to go.
ok since emissions isnt a consern that is great. you can remove a bunch of crap off that 5.8 . you will need a different ecu of course as well and that website can also help with that to. just dont go carb man efi efi efi efi efi hehe
