I need to replace the front calipers on my 78 f100. I have been looking and all I can find is one bolt by the draglink that looks like it might be the one to remove it. is this possible? I have never seen a caliper held on by one bolt,so I don't think that is the right bolt, but I can't find any others. any help is appreciated....Ben
the caliper is held on by one bolt . then you need to nock out the retainer and the spring with a punch. the bolt prevents the retainer from moving side to side.
It helps to loosen the bleeder screw to get room for the pads to slide off of a worn rotor. Even though this will allow air into the line it doesn't matter because you should always flush out the old brake fluid when installing new pads.
A brass drift works well for driving the keys out. IIRC that's also what Chiltons recommends. Last time I did mine, I reused the keys and just bought new springs to put in since the old ones were a little flattened out. If you do go with new springs and they seem really stubborn going back in, compare the "ears" of the new and old. I had to grind mine down a bit because the new ones were longer and didn't have the corners beveled as much.
I just ended up using a flat ended steel punch.. Mine were kinda rusted on a bit. Fortunately the rebuilt calipers came with new springs and retainers. It didn't really seem to hurt the old ones to bash on them though.. they're pretty tough steel.
if you have not already installed the new calipers i would suggest using a wire brush to clean the slide area on the spindle and then apply a small amount of copper coat or something like it to the slides
