where are the engine numbers located on the 4.0

thanks ill look the reason i am asking it that i just got this ranger thats blowing white smoke and the guy has a lot of the connectors and vacuum lines disconnected and it came with another 4.0 thats sitting in the bed that came from a junk yard i have read a post that ford had changed the pistons and heads on the later 4.0
