Horrible axle condition, emergency help please....
1976 F150
360 automatic transmission
Front axle, w/power steering
I finally got the spindles off with a very heavy leather hammer and some beating, but I found it went from bad to worse.
pulled the axles out hoping for the best, but found the opposite
the seal on the passenger side axle was gone and the elements have been hanging out inside the axle tube for some time, the axle is rusty almost all the way to the differential gearset, the drivers side is not as bad, but still needs some work.
What can I do?
Sand down the axleshafts?
Hone the inside of the axle tube?
I'll deffinately be removing the differential gears, ring, and pinion for further inspection, some 80-90w (i suspect) came out of the passenger side after removal of the axleshaft.
I may be misunderstanding you but if you're talking about the axle shaft (on the front axle) being muddy/rusty in the tube this is completely normal. There is no outer seal on these axles so water and junk flows into and out of the tubes. The seals are on the inner ends of the tubes. If the inner seal is bad you'll need to pull the carrier to replace it and just clean up the axle shaft with an emery cloth where it rides in the seal. In fact I recommend cleaning this section of the axle shaft up any time you pull them to prolong the life of the seal. The rest doesn't matter. I know it looks dirty and ugly but it won't hurt a thing.
Btw, it's common to have some gear fluid leak out of the tubes once you pull a shaft as there's nothing to keep it in there.
