Hi, I have posted here a time or two.I have now completed the removal of a 401 buick nailhead and 2 sp auto from the '40.Both were in sad shape.I installed a good 302 and a T-18 from a '70 1/2 ton given to me by a farmer down the road. The previous owner had installed a steering column and box etc from a 70's chev .The truck wanders all over the road and EVERYTHING is tight and aligned(with the exception of chev steering box) Well, I have ordered all the gear to convert steering back to stock and my question is this....When the steering column and box arrive,is there a way to tell if it is in good shape before I install it?A certain amount of play or a method to inspect it?The box is used, but claimed to be good and the pitman arm and drag link are nos.By the way, the engine and tranny fit like a glove. The t-18 comes up through the original hole with slight modification.Everything is accessable and pan clears well.Guess it is easier than in a 1/2 ton! Gary
Sounds like you're really getting some progress done on your pickup, congradulations on that!
Technically there should be no play what so ever. Everything should be pretty solid. Since the box is used it would be a good idea to go ahead and open up the side and inspect the gears for visual wear and even change out the grease or oil. Anyways good luck with it!
The column and steering box is here, nice wheel too.I have an old Audels truck repair book with adjustment info but need to know is this a worm and roller or worm and sector? The instructions differ. Also it says' 46 truck' in grease paint.I'm hoping this is correct for my '40.Any help appreciated.....Gary
