Will '50 parts fit my '46? Tailgate, e-brake cable?
Hey guys, a buddy of mine has what I believe to be a '50 f1 sitting in his field. I was wondering if that parking brake cable (from hand control to splitter under the bed) will fit on my '46?
Also, what about the tailgate? My truck is a 1 ton but my neighbors is a half ton.. so either way it'll get to use if it will fit and be correct for our year trucks.
Like I said, I'm not sure the year of the truck but the ford logo on the tailgate is cursive writing and the bed itself has slanted bed rails like my '46 does. I believe it to be the style right after the '42-47's. Any thoughts?
A one ton should have a lever mounted next to the shifter, used for the emergency brake. It goes to a brake band around the drive shaft, so it wouldnt fit your 1/2 ton. A 50 half ton has the same emergency brake cables as the 46. The tailgate should fit, though I am not possitive. Just take a couple comparative measurements.
If the 50 is even fair, buy the whole truck. Sounds like you could get it for next to nothing.
The one ton trucks came with 8 foot beds compared to the 6.5 foot for 1/2 tons.
I put a 49 1/2 ton bed on my 46.
The 1 ton used the 1/2 ton style parkling brake setup with the handle mounted under the dash, running to the brake drums. The driveshaft setup was used on the 1.5 ton and biggers. But they did use a different length cable, so it prob will not work.
The tailgate will not work either, the 1 ton has a taller and wider bed than the 1/2 ton models.
Ok, so it sounds like a go with my parking brake cable as they are both handle mounted left side under the dash.
I figured the tailgate won't fit on my half ton but will it fit on my neighbors 1/2 ton? And be 'correct'?
I was thinking about making him an offer on the truck. His dad wanted him to crush it but he couldn't bring himself to do it. So, I figure I might be able to get it for scrap steel price - couple hundred bucks. It's pretty nice, mostly there, flathead V8.. etc..
The 1/2 ton tailgate on your buddy's truck will work on the 1/2 ton your neighbor has, and look pretty correct. The only diff in the later script gate was the eyelets for the chains were mounted under the top roll, instead of in the roll as the '46 had.
But the parking brakes cable probably will not work. The 1 ton and 1/2 used their own cables, the 1 ton has a longer cable.
If the truck is good enough I would try to get it, save another old truck from just being scrapped. Couple hundred bucks is good..the flatty should be worth at least that.

Thanks guys, I'll be making a trip out there this weekend to survey the truck again.
Well, darn, I hoping the parking brake cable would work from the '50 F1 to my '46 1-ton.
Anyway, now that I know the tailgate won't fit my 1-ton, it'll be put to use for my neighbors '46 1/2 ton. If I don't buy the truck as a whole. The thing is.... that'd be my 4th Ford truck at once! That's too many projects to do at once... but darn, it'd be cool.
Hey guys, here's a pic of that truck I was talking about. Can anyone tell exactly what year it is? And if that tailgate is correct, for sure, for a '46 1/2 ton?
He talked to his dad and he said that he doesn't want to sell it now. I'm like, yeah right, it's just sitting there and they need the money. So, I told him that if he wants to get rid of just the tailgate to give me a call.
As near as I can tell from the picture it's a '52 F1. No, the tailgate is not a correct replacement for your 46. In order to use it you'd have to replace the latching mech. 42-50 has a hook/button in the top roll of the gate for the chain. The 50-52 has its latch mounted below the roll.
I can't believe all the old iron in the neighborhood.
Thanks mtflat. Well I guess I don't have to worry about the tailgate anymore. That truck is pretty neat, it's got 3 flathead V8's sitting in the back of it, as well as one in the engine compartment.
Actually, this guys house is about 45miles away from me in eastern CO. Kinda in the middle of no where. They have so much cool stuff, I just walk around checking out all the old semi's, trailers, army duces, generators, single wide trailer houses (LOL), junk and trash for hours. I always come home with cool hubcaps and chrome stuff for display.
