Exclamation Gas Tank Vent System???

My pickup has recently started making a farting noise coming from the gas cap. I think it is because my gas tank is not being properly vented and now the pressure is released through the gas cap. How do I go about cleaning any vents throughout the system to fix my problem?

The vent line is right next to the fill tube...smaller hose. You could pull it and clean it out.

Anyone else know of another vent line on the tank?

What are you working on? It is vented by the computer to the front of the truck. Does the check engine light come on?

If there is a problem with your evap system, (the venting system for your fuel tank) it will throw a check engine light, if it does it two drive cycles in a row. So if there isn't a check engine light then there is nothing to worry about.

the check engine light hasn't came on...i don't think it is a huge problem b/c it is still able to realease the pressure through the gas cap. the only problem is that when it vents through the cap it makes the gurgling noise about once a minute when the pickup is idoling. it's more of an annoyance than anything else but thank you for your time.

Is the tank full or empty when it does this?

it has done it consistantly for about a month now and it makes no difference whether or not the tank is full

You might scan for codes anyway. It needs to vent the pressure or it could eventually rupture the tank.

yeah, see if it pulls any codes. If it was building up to much pressure than it would throw a light. Plus the pcm is constantly running test on all systems even the evap system, to make sure that it is passing emissions. all the evap system is for is to get all the hydrocarbons out of the fuel vapor before the vapors are let out of the fuel tank and disposed of on the ground. whenever you turn your vehicle off it opens the vent solenoid letting the pressure of the vapors push from the gas tank to the charcoal canister where it absorbes the hydrocrbons and NOx. then when you crank it up it will open up the vent solenoid and the evap valve. when that opens it will let the engine pull air through the evap system taking the hydrocarbons and NOx with it and burning it in the cumbustion process keeping our enviroment cleaner. It test this system by closing the vent solenoid and letting the engine pull a vacuum on the evap system and then it checks the amount of time it takes it to bleed back up. If it bleeds up to fast then you have a leak. You might also want to check and make sure that your check engine light bulb is not blown out, because it could be throwing a light and you not know i

It sounds like my dads pickup, he just got it fixed it was a vaccum canister in the evap system bu ti cant tell you when at or how to clean it becasue ford did it, bu tmaybe somebody else knows where it is and how to clean it or replace it. i guess you could look in a hanyes manual, that might tell you where it is. Good Luck
